I recently had the opportunity to check out a recent performance of Gotham City Improv’s “Off the Top of Our Heads”. I had heard of Gotham City Improv many times before, but had never found the time to actually check out one of their shows until recently. I am a huge improv fan. Some of the funniest lines come from people that literally have to work off what is given to them moments before they hit the stage. It’s unfiltered, fun, and audience-interactive.
This particular show takes place every Friday at 10 PM at 48 West 21st Street 8th Floor, New York NY. Press 801# for the buzzer, and make your way upstairs for some serious laughs. The show is only $6 to attend and the crowd is not large, at all, (we are trying to change that, though) so you don’t have to worry about finding a place to sit and enjoy. Every Friday, a different cast is used for the show. The people you saw one Friday, will not be there the following Friday. The director is Marc Adam Smith, who is also hilarious. He comes out with a clipboard and tells the cast who will be participating in which skit and what they will be doing. He also often asks for the audience to shout out locations, activities, etc. These are also later used in the skit.
I had tears streaming down my face from laughing so much throughout the hour-long show. Like I said earlier, there is just something THAT much funnier when the cast that is putting on the show has no idea what to expect. Another cool fact about this show is that it’s BYOB. Feel free to bring beer, wine, anything you want really. Just make sure you clean-up after yourselves when the show ends. You’ll also have the chance to meet the cast and Marc when the show wraps up around 11 PM. They are all very friendly and down to earth.
Above was this past Friday’s cast. Just a reminder, the cast does change every Friday. This is a great way to spend a Friday evening. Grab some friends, some drinks, and head over to Gotham City Improv! You will not be disappointed.
